METHODOLOGY OF TEACHING
  • Maximum 20 students per class, per degree/ course.
  • Course plans are usually taken from the faculty at the beginning of each course.
  • Minimum 2 hours of lectures are provided per week per paper. Usually 4 papers are taken hence it is of 8-10 hours lecture/week for 10 months. Target given to lecturers is to complete the syllabus by the end of February each year.

The lectures are interspersed with tutorials- 1 hour per fortnight, quizzes, home assignments and written examinations at the end of each topic in a paper.

March is devoted to full-fledged revision and problem- shooting while going over the whole syllabus and updating the students with new relevant case laws or articles or developments.

April- Question solving of the past 5 years examination papers -topic-wise. The students are usually asked to revise a certain topic (according to a pre-set schedule) and questions of the past 5 years' papers are then handed to them in class on the said topic. The students are then asked to write skeleton answers to

each question, which are openly discussed in class- in the light of the updated materials they already have.

May- the 1st week we hold full 3 hours mock examinations- questions are usually set by the individual lecturer in each paper in line with the past examination papers of University of London, External Programme. Feed back classes at the end of the mock exams give the students a clear picture of where they stand.

  • Extra Counselling for individual students whenever the necessity arises.
  • Copies of Main textbooks recommended in their subject- guides provided to students by DCLE upon Admission at a subsidised rate.
  • Library facilities include reference books and Internet browsing facilities. Computing facilities Personal computers with the latest configuration, with cable internet connection, and accessories, e.g. printers, CD Writers, scanners and multi- media facilities are in use. Students have access from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. No extra fees are charged for computing facilities. Audio- visual aids one television with cable connection along with one DVD player is available and overhead projector for use in class room and seminars.
  • Regular handouts provided for students who are kept up to date re: recent case laws/ articles/ developments.
  • Home assignments given to students regularly and checked and commented upon by appropriate faculty.
  • Faculty meetings held regularly to evaluate the students' progress and bimonthly progress reports sent to the students. Student progress is currently assessed on the basis of weekly tutorials which involve oral class participation; monthly written examination in line with the actual examination questions (topic-wise); surprise tests and quizzes; home assignments and case studies involving research.

The students' scripts are checked and marked by their teachers, their problems are addressed individually and they receive a bimonthly progress report with suggestions on how to improve. Students who ignore this process are given an early warning that DCLE shall not take responsibility for their results.

  • Faculty evaluation by students is carried out from time to time in order to maintain the standard DCLE has set upon itself.
  • A specially designed legal English course is intended to be provided to those whose level of English is below native.

Our teaching methods seem to have worked quite well since our pass rate in the last sessions were between 75%

to 89%, and we are bent upon constantly improving our methodology based partially on students' evaluations which are taken from time to time. Our regular faculty meetings also give us different points of view and so do our meetings with students' parents and guardians. We have also benefited from advice given to us by Dr. Wayne Morrison and University of London External Programme staff from time to time.
